Design Trends 2020

Trends change, but sometimes a great trend is simply too good to file away.  Hence – the open concept floor plan of construction.

Offering flowing open spaces, natural lighting and clear sight lines, open floor plans are a reflection of not only the hottest construction trends, but are more of a reflection of the simplicity and functionality that people seek in the everyday lives.  These designs are perfect for those that entertain often with open space for guests to gather and feel connected, for parents who want to keep a watchful eye on their children and for those who want to take any size home and make it feel larger.

As people turn to their home to provide added functionality, the latest and hottest design trends are found in some of the smallest and often most under-utilized areas – mudrooms, drop zones and laundry rooms.  No longer just a place to do one task, these areas are now being designed to become more workable and to add more function.  Washer and dryer closets are being traded for laundry rooms, complete with folding areas, hanging storage and dog wash stations.  Designed with kids in mind, mudrooms are now outfitted with storage options for backpacks, jackets, sports equipment and lunchboxes.  Mudrooms are also housing small artificial lighting and mini-herb and succulent gardens to grow fresh cooking ingredients as well as decor for use throughout the home.

People are also looking to maximize the space in their homes by utilizing a room that offers the ability for a home office but can easily be transformed to an additional guest room, when needed. When designed correctly, this room enables homeowners a work/life balance that most people only dream of.

Finally, as people aim to age in place, in-law apartments are a hot trend for 2020.  With the rising costs of in home care or long-term care, families are finding that welcoming mom and dad is an option that provides a cost effective way to age in the comfort of home surrounded by family.  Converting basements and bonus rooms into mini-apartments is an increasingly hot trend this year.  Those with space to grow are adding on a one or two-level apartment to an existing home.

Homes of 2020 are clearly a reflection of growing and changing needs of families in the 21st century.  Let us help make your space a reflection of the functionality of your life.
