Southern Maryland summers are something special: warm evenings, waterfront views, and the rhythm of live music drifting through the air. For Patuxent Architects, few things are more rewarding than seeing our designs come to life in moments like these.
A Stage Built for the Spotlight
Years ago, we had the pleasure of designing the original Waterfront Pavilion at the Calvert Marine Museum. The structure quickly became a beloved feature of the museum’s Waterside Music Series, a space where the community could come together to enjoy outdoor concerts all summer long.
As the series gained popularity and began to attract nationally recognized artists, it became clear that the pavilion needed an upgrade. That’s when the museum came back to us to help take it to the next level.
Elevating the Experience
We were honored to return and reimagine the pavilion for this new chapter. Our goal? Modify the original design to better accommodate the technical requirements of large-scale performances with higher rigging points, improved lighting capacity, and enhanced flexibility for touring crews and equipment.
The result is a taller, more dynamic structure that’s ready to support the showstopping effects and sound systems today’s artists bring with them.

A Night to Remember
Recently, the upgraded pavilion hosted a performance by Darius Rucker, and the transformation was on full display. As the sun set and the music began, the pavilion came alive with vibrant lights, immersive sound, and an atmosphere that felt like something out of a major music festival.
While photos can capture the spectacle, they can’t fully convey the energy of the crowd or the way the music filled the space. It was an unforgettable evening; one that reminded us why we do what we do.
Designing for Community Moments
At Patuxent Architects, we believe great architecture creates opportunity.
In this case, the Waterfront Pavilion is more than just a stage; it’s a community space. A place where neighbors gather, where memories are made, and where the stresses of everyday life fade away for a few hours of music, laughter, and togetherness.
We’re proud to have played a part in creating that space, and even prouder to see it used to support the incredible mission of the Calvert Marine Museum.
The proceeds from each concert help fund their work preserving the region’s maritime history and connecting the community to the bay we call home.
