Something Old + Something New: Transforming a Family Farm Into a Barn Wedding Venue

When a local family reached out to us with a vision of turning their family farm into a full-service wedding venue, it was a unique opportunity that we just couldn’t pass up.

The farm, located in St. Leonard, Maryland, wasn’t in use at the time, and the owner wanted to keep it in the family. The owner’s daughter was planning her wedding, and had always dreamt of getting married on the farm, but there wasn’t a space that would work for her event. They had the perfect solution: build a barn for their daughter’s wedding, which would be turned into a commercial wedding venue that would generate revenue and allow the family to keep it for generations to come.

The concept was to build a traditional post-and-beam barn to create a rustic wedding or wedding reception venue. Together with the owners, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work to create a truly one-of-a-kind space.

Every detail was carefully thought out to build a rustic yet glamorous space that any bride would love. The barn’s upper level features a mezzanine at one end, and boasts exposed wood posts, beams, and roof framing with wood-peg joinery. All wood flooring, paneling, and ceiling add to the elegance.

The lower level features a bridal suite, complete with a dressing room for the bride and her bridesmaids, a lounge, and a prep area for caterers.

The details sprinkled throughout the barn truly give it its character and charm. The farm owner used wood from an old barn on the farm to create unique vanity tops for the restrooms. The hardware, railings, and lighting provide a historic feel.

The Barn at Pleasant Acres was a project we truly fell in love with and will always be proud to have been a part of. Our team worked with the owner to marry (pun intended) the lower and upper levels of the barn. We prepared preliminary design and construction documents for the project, putting their dream on paper. Not only were they able to plan the wedding of their daughter’s dreams, but they brought a unique barn wedding venue to Southern Maryland that would allow their family to hold onto the farm and be a space where families can create beautiful memories for years to come.
